Winter Series is a collaboration between Food Not Bombs and Greensboro Public Library. It includes a weekly program and a meal. Many who participate are homeless. The Winter Series will run from December 3rd through the end of March. Programs will include movies, health, govenment officials and celebrations.

December 3 - Health Day
Members of the UNCG Nursing & Social Justice Club will be doing a "listening project" to learn more about the health care needs of homeless people, and to learn about their experiences with local health care system. The information that comes out of the listening project will help us decide what to do on subsequent health & beauty days. The group also hopes to begin something similar to the "Hungry in Greensboro" list with information on where to go for health care help,

Notes (12/5/07) Nurses and professors came from UNCG ready to treat injuries, give out supplies (bandages, hand sanitizer, etc.), measure blood pressure, listen to health concerns. One question posed at the table I was at, "What are your thoughts on the problems of the health care system?" --A vote was taken on which movies to see for Movie Nights. The clear winner was Batman Begins, with War of the Worlds running a close second. The rest were ties, so we'll vote again in the early new year for the final two movies.

December 10 - Government Official

December 17 - Movie Night: Batman Begins This movie starring Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Katie Holmes, explores the origins of the Batman Legend and the Dark Knight's emergence as a force for good in Gotham. Rated PG-13, it is 140 minutes, so we will begin screening at 6:30 pm. Library staff member, Ron Headen, will provide a brief introduction to the movie during dinner.

Notes (12/31/07) The manager of Carousel Theaters (Battleground Avenue) donated a giant bag of popcorn which was enjoyed by all. Ron was unable to attend but sent along notes of the film.

December 31 - Culture / Celebration - New Years celebration featuring Cakalak Thunder.

Notes (1/10/08) Cakalak Thunder brought down the house (and brought in several curious visitors!) In addition to the meal and the music we were able to distribute a number of army surplus sleeping bags and jackets.

January 7 - Members of the UNCG Nursing & Social Justice Club did blood pressure checks and sugar testing, as well as treating some minor wounds (and brought homemade spaghetti and cookies). In addition a number of people had donated sample-sized toiletries that were distributed to anyone who wanted them AND we were able to offer haircuts and shaves, thanks to the help of several volunteers.

January 14 - Government Official
Mayor Yvonne Johnson will be at Food Not Bombs from 6 to a little before 7.
Notes (1/28/08) Mayor Johnson answered questioned and spurred conversation that lasted beyond her visit. Questions included: What are major agenda items for your term? What is up with the International Civil Rights Museum? Will the City support an increase in minimum wage? What are the possibilities for a Day Shelter?

January 28 - Movie Night: War of the Worlds (2005)

February 4 - (Notes 2/12/08:After dinner, about 20 people stuck around to watch video clips from Liz's DVD, Tent Cities Toolkit, which features the history and development of Dignity Village, a thriving tent city in Portland, Oregon.)

February 11 - Health and Beauty
Many thanks to Dr. Morrison who donated 30 dental kits.

February 18 - Government Official

Notes: At-Large County Commissioner Paul Gibson, as well as City Council Members Goldie Wells, Dianne T. Bellamy-Small and Zack Mathany showed up for Government Officials Night in response to an email sent out by Cara Michelle. Topics of conversation included the need for a day center, the lack of jobs for people with criminal records, and issues with service providers that receive government funding. Bellamy-Small urged the group to attend City Council meetings and share their concerns during the public comment period. Gibson vowed to come back again and bring fellow Commissioners and County staff, to hear more and find solutions. (text from Cara Michelle's Blog, Chosen Fast)
